The Plymouth Care Journeys Movement

Barnardo’s and Plymouth City Council are working in strategic partnership to transform the lives of care experienced children and young people. We are describing this work as a ‘movement’.

Our ambition is to make real change for care experienced young people, with a lasting legacy beyond our work. The Plymouth Care Journeys Movement will be more than a stand-alone project.

Our current delivery

AA Learn to Drive

Following a recent pilot, Barnardo's have chosen to support young people with driving lessons to help them access opportunities as they become young adults. The aim is that the experience also helps to develop self-esteem and confidence.

Find Your Future

The Find Your Future project is part of the programme is to ensure we are providing support to today's 19-21-year-olds. We are focused on care experienced young people who are not in Education, Employment or Training. However, our work with individuals is much wider than EET.
We don’t have a formal referral route - we start our work with young people through conversation.

Wellbeing Wednesdays

This group will be our way of delivering emotional health and wellbeing sessions to small groups of young people aged 14 - 16-years-old.

It will also offer the opportunity for young people to develop practical life skills.

Current support has been paused however we are due to re-start these sessions both virtually and eventually face to face where safe to do so.

Project Acorn- Beta Phase

Our aim is to create the conditions for children's services practitioners to reduce loneliness and social isolation for children in and leaving care in Plymouth.

Our vision for the next phase of the Care Journeys partnership focuses on embedding “service design” methods within PCC, with Barnardo’s as a learning partner, to empower children’s services practitioners to deliver relationship-centred services and enable positive destinations for children in care and care leavers.

Life Labs

We are working with LEAP to create a digital platform to aid independent living. The idea is young people can work through different scenarios and situations through a virtual online platform.

This project will look at a social change approach that enables a suite of tools to be created that truly meet the needs of care experienced young people.

Plymouth Advocacy 16+

When we first started undertaking participation work with care experienced young people, it was clear some young people had a number of issues in their own lives that they needed resolving. Therefore Barnardo's agreed to a one-year pilot to ensure we could support those young people with issue-based advocacy. The pilot sits alongside our commissioned advocacy service and is available to young people 16+ who are care experienced.

To ensure care experienced young people are at the heart of everything we do, we have a dedicated participation group. Young people involved in our participation work have opportunities to develop their own skills through co production activities and also support innovative ways to bring about systems change.
